Kathmandu, June 1

Emerging politician Ujwal Thapa, who established the Bibeksheel Nepali party a few years ago, is no more.

He was popular among the youth of Nepal thanks to his courage to establish a party with an aim to do ‘alternative politics.’

The 44-year-old man breathed his last at 4:25 this afternoon while undergoing treatment at Mediciti Hospital of Lalitpur, according to a statement issued on behalf of his family, friends and fans.

He had tested positive for the coronavirus a few days ago. Doctors had applied the extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) technology in their bids to treat him, but that failed.

He tested negative for the virus on Monday, but his health had already deteriorated by then. Despite his coronavirus negativity, the family says the final rites will be private and has asked fans not to participate.

A few days ago, his fans had collected funds for his treatment nationally and internationally. Over Rs 5 million was collected, but the fundraising had stopped citing no improvements in his health.

Thapa’s Bibeksheel Nepali had merged with Rabindra Mishra’s Sajha Party to become the Bibeksheel Sajha Party in the run-up to the 2017 parliamentary elections. However, they had split in early January 2019. Following that, Thapa was not much active in politics.

The two parties re-merged in December 2020, but Thapa had already handed over the party leadership to Milan Pandey then.
